The DeJoy\Woś Family Foundation has been a longtime supporter of St. Pius X Catholic Church and School in Greensboro, North Carolina—a vibrant parish community of more than 1,800 registered families and one of the most flourishing Catholic elementary schools in the Diocese of Charlotte. The family’s generosity spans multiple major initiatives, from the construction of the church sanctuary to the creation of a state-of-the-art early education center.
The DeJoy Primary Education Center
The DeJoy\Woś Family Foundation was a proud major benefactor of the DeJoy Primary Education Center, a state-of-the-art early education building that has transformed St. Pius X School’s ability to serve its youngest learners.
The $3.6 million center was part of the parish’s three-year “Making a Place to Gather and Grow” campaign, combined under the auspices of the Diocese of Charlotte’s “Forward in Faith, Hope, and Love” campaign. St. Pius X parishioners raised more than $6 million of the $8.6 million campaign goal.
The 22,885-square-foot facility opened its doors to students on August 22, 2016, and was formally dedicated on September 13, 2016, with a blessing by Bishop Peter Jugis. The center houses:
- Two pre-kindergarten classrooms (a new program made possible by the facility)
- Two kindergarten classrooms
- Two first-grade classrooms
- Space for small-group instruction
- A large assembly room
- Collaboration space between classrooms
- A dedicated pre-kindergarten playground
- Large floor-to-ceiling windows allowing generous natural light
With a 154-student capacity, the DeJoy Primary Education Center has been uniquely designed from the ground up to meet the physical and educational needs of younger students. The center enables St. Pius X School to focus on younger learners’ needs and shepherd them through their elementary school years, with teachers working together to ensure a streamlined and seamless educational experience.
At the dedication ceremony, Dr. Aldona Woś spoke about the family’s commitment to early education:
“We know that when quality primary education is offered to children it increases their chances of succeeding, not only in school but in life. And if you incorporate this opportunity with the fundamental historic tradition of a Catholic education, stimulating interactions in a creative environment coupled with parental involvement, there are no limits to future opportunities for our students and our community. My husband Louis DeJoy and I are blessed to be able to support this investment in primary education for the youngest of our community members. The children are our future!”
Louis DeJoy added: “Aldona and I are very proud to support Monsignor Marcaccio and his vision to transform this campus with the addition of the DeJoy Primary Education Center. Under his leadership, all of us who have supported this education initiative have favorably impacted the young minds at St. Pius for many years to come.”
Monsignor Anthony Marcaccio, pastor of St. Pius X, reflected on the center’s significance at the dedication: “When you walk into the building, you’ll see there is an American flag and a papal flag because we believe that this building is an asset, not just to our church and our faith community, but to the city of Greensboro. It’s a huge asset to have: a choice in education. We believe that this institution which we dedicate today will form not just good Christians and hopefully help make saints but will form good citizens of these great United States of America.”
Bishop Peter Jugis noted the collaborative nature of the project: “It’s a testimony to the generosity of the entire parish family. And for that we give thanks to God—especially to the Holy Spirit, which has inspired this work and has brought it to successful completion through our cooperation with the work of the Spirit.”
Today, St. Pius X School serves over 400 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and maintains the highest enrollment of any Catholic elementary school outside the city of Charlotte in the Diocese of Charlotte.
Saint Pius the Tenth Church
The DeJoy\Woś Family Foundation was also a major benefactor for the construction of the new Saint Pius the Tenth Church, which was dedicated on April 17, 2010 by Bishop Peter Jugis. The family’s gift was used to build the Cloister, a beautiful architectural element of the new sanctuary.
The new church, which seats 1,100 worshipers, replaced the parish’s original 1981 sanctuary that seated only 375. The expansion was made possible through the parish’s capital campaign “To Make a Place at the Table” and reflects the tremendous growth of the St. Pius X community over the decades.
In 2021, the DeJoy\Woś Family Foundation made an additional gift to St. Pius X, continuing their longstanding support of the parish and school community.
St. Pius X Catholic School Biennial Gala
The DeJoy\Woś Family Foundation has been a proud supporter of the St. Pius X Catholic School Biennial Gala, which raises funds to support the school’s mission of educating children of faith, compassion, and intellect.
70th Anniversary Gala – “Paving the Way” (March 15, 2025) The Foundation was a Platinum Sponsor for the school’s 70th Anniversary Gala, “Paving the Way,” held at the Greensboro Country Club. Proceeds from the gala support increasing student safety, security, and well-being at St. Pius X Catholic School. Community leaders, alumni, parents, clergy, and parish members gathered to reflect on the school’s history of growth since its founding in 1955.
2019 Biennial Gala – “Securing Our Future” (March 9, 2019) The Foundation was a Platinum Sponsor for the 2019 Biennial Gala, “Securing Our Future.” The gala honored the Inaugural Comet Heritage Award recipients—an award that distinguishes the best of the St. Pius X Catholic School family in supporting its school, students, and staff. Honorees included Tom Martin and Warren & Betty Corgan, recognized for their extraordinary commitment to the school community.
A Partnership Rooted in Faith and Education
St. Pius X School, founded in 1955, has grown from humble beginnings into one of North Carolina’s most respected Catholic elementary schools. The school’s mission—to educate and nurture students in pre-kindergarten through 8th grade to develop children of faith, compassion, and intellect who are committed to independent thinking and service to others—aligns closely with the DeJoy\Woś Family Foundation’s commitment to educational excellence.
Today, the school’s facilities include 14 core subject classrooms, a music room, two Spanish classrooms, a language center, a renovated auditorium, a computer lab, a STEM lab, a full media center, and the DeJoy Primary Education Center with its own multipurpose room and playground.
